Dr. Vijay Chandru Recognized as an AAAS Fellow for Outstanding Contributions to Science and Social Good

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has bestowed the prestigious title of AAAS Fellow upon Dr. Vijay Chandru, Executive Advisor at ARTPARK-IISc and Co-founder of Strand Life Sciences.

The AAAS, renowned for its commitment to scientific advancement, annually selects individuals whose efforts significantly contribute to the progress of science and its applications. Dr. Chandru has been honored "For significant contributions to theoretical computer science and computational biology, and for development of technology for social good."

Dr. Vijay Chandru, a distinguished academic, entrepreneur, and advisor in translational research based in Bangalore, India, brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the field. With a PhD from MIT, he has held tenured professorships at Purdue University and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), teaching computational mathematics. Additionally, he serves as a visiting professor at NCBS and a visiting scientist at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, focusing on global health and population dynamics.

Recognized by esteemed academic bodies such as the Indian Academy of Science (IASc) and the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), Dr. Chandru's pioneering research in computational methods focused on  the foundations of data and decision sciences. His entrepreneurial journey includes leadership roles at Strand Life Sciences, India's premier precision medicine solutions company, stewardship of the biotechnology industry apex body of India (ABLE) and mentoring the bioworks ecosystem in Bangalore.

As a Technology Pioneer of the World Economic Forum and a member of the Global Industry Advisory Council for the future of health, Dr. Chandru has been an influential voice  in shaping the discourse on healthcare innovation and policy. Currently, he focuses on technology for public good at ARTPARK and IISc, collaborating with public health stakeholders to enable digital public infrastructure for clinical health, one health, climate, and Indic language technology development.

Dr. Vijay Chandru's commitment to achieving technology enabled universal healthcare and addressing affordable diagnostics and therapeutics for rare genetic and orphan diseases  across India by 2030 is evident through his work with non-profits like the Centre for Health Education and Technology (CHET) and Open Platforms for Orphan Diseases (OPFORD) and through entrepreneurial drive  at Strand Life Sciences and at CRISPRBITS.

Some would recognize that Dr. Chandru has often chosen anti-disciplinary tracks, pivoting several times to  create new paths through novel territory that would advance science.  His dedication to deep, scientific innovation for social impact serves as an inspiration to aspiring scientists and impact entrepreneurs worldwide.
